Where to Stay
The four main hotels that appear in any internet booking search are listed below. All four are within walking distance of the Racecourse.
Ramada Plaza by Wyndham - This is the most modern option, and it is slightly more expensive. It has a restaurant and bar. Click Here
The Lemon Tree - This older hotel has charm but smaller rooms with thin walls and very little common space. It also has one of the nicer restaurants in Wrexham. Click Here
Premier Inn Wrexham City Centre - This “casual, budget” chain hotel is the closest to the Racecourse and train station. Click Here
Wynnstay Arm by Marston's Inns - This older hotel is the only one of the four located in the city Center. There is a large pub on the ground floor. It is known affectionately by locals for it’s historic significance as the birthplace of Welsh football but not so favorably thought of as a place to spend a night. Click Here
Note: We have not explored AirBnB and other such options, so cannot comment on the availability or quantity of these options.
Eating and Drinking
A restaurant and pub guide is beyond us at this point but here are a few general notes.
On weekdays, many pubs and restaurants stop serving food around 8 PM. We walked to a few places that had hours listed as open, only to find they were closed or no longer serving food.
King Street is within walking distance of the Racecourse and city hotels, and has a few places, most with the kebab-pizza-burger menu, that are open later.
At the stadium, food options include the food truck in the Turf parking lot and the stalls under the stands.
As opposed to food, drinks were easy to come by. During our first night in town, we were invited to visit a local pub around midnight. When we asked what time the pubs close in town, no one in the group came up with a confident answer. They all agreed there was a legal closing time, they just did not know what that time was. We found out later that the “lock-in” practice rendered any legal time meaningless. At whatever time it was deemed necessary (by the bar staff/owner, I guess), the place locks the doors and everyone stays inside, apparently meeting the letter of the law by “closing” the pub.
Walking Tour
As stated earlier attractions in Wrexham are easily reached on foot. If you want a planned route, you can stop by the Turf and pick up a copy of a walking tour guide.
The Racecourse
Wrexham AFC recently began giving organized stadium tours. For more information Click Here
Wrexham Museum
The Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives is currently closed. They are undergoing major renovations. The Museum of Two Halve Project will convert the museum into “a Football Museum for Wales and a new Wrexham Museum.” For more information Click Here
Football Heritage Tours
The museum currently offers guided walking described as “a look at the people, places and events that shaped football in Wrexham, and across the whole of Wales.” For information, including current schedule and booking Click Here
Wrexham Lager Brewery
The Wrexham Lager Brewery is currently located in the city center, but will be moving to a new location in the near future. They currently do not offer brewery tours, and when we inquired online about a gift shop, we were directed to use the online shop. However, a walk to the brewery led to the discovery of a small brewery shop, where we had a friendly chat with a couple of employees whose jobs with the company were obviously far more important jobs than assisting a couple of Americans in search of Wrexham Lager souvenirs. However, they could not have been more friendly and helpful.
They are planning to have formal gift shop at the new brewery location, and they are undergoing a new branding project, so inventory at the current location is limited.
If you go, realize the brewery location is somewhat hidden behind shops at 42 St Georges Crescent.
