Getting To and From Qatar

General Comment:  In early 2022, prices for flights to Doha from the U.S and countries in the Middle East rose dramatically and are not expected to decrease.

International Flights: The options are pretty straightforward, and few good deals exist for purchased flights. Some routes still have availability for rewards tickets that may have low or no change fees - allowing you to book multiple return flights and be able to return after the USMNT plays their final match.

Regional Flights: There are a couple of reasons to fly to Qatar from another airport in the Middle East.

1. It may be cheaper to fly to/from the U.S. and another airport in the Middle East and then take a separate flight in/out of Qatar.

2. Staying outside Qatar between USMNT matches may allow for lower accommodation prices, less restrictive legal measures, a greater variety of activities, etc.

Here are the lowest airfares for some common destinations, as of early April 2022.

  • Dubai, UAE – to Doha $400-750/from Doha $200-450

  • Abu Dhabi, UAE - to Doha $400-450/from Doha $150-200

  • Amman, Jordan - to Doha $300-450/from Doha $300-350

  • Tel Aviv, Israel - to Doha $500-550/from Doha $400-500

  • Muscat, Oman - to Doha $400-600/from Doha $250-300

  • Manama, Bahrain - to Doha $400-600/from Doha $300-500

Between April and mid-August, the price and availability of regional flight has been frequently changing. In addition, those with booked flights have often seen their flight schedules change.

Land Routes: The following are land routes to/from major cities and Doha. As of mid-August, fans have been unable to find buses, car hire, and/or rental car options between these cities and Doha.

  • Damman, Saudi Arabia – 5 hours

  • Riyhad, Saudi Arabi – 7 hours

  • Manama, Bahrain – 6 hours

  • Abu Dhabi, UAE – 6 hours

  • Dubai, UAE – 7 hours

Sea Routes:  None exist. The long-rumored ferry service between Bahrain has not been established.

Getting Around Qatar

General Comment: Limited details are available regarding transportation within Qatar during the World Cup. It is reported that a large number of buses will be imported, and this will be the mainstay of transportation between major fan sites, including match day transportation to and from stadiums.

Taxis and Ride-share – Currently, both are accessible throughout the Doha area and prices are similar to those in a typical American city. As of early April, the cost for a 5-10 minute ride around the city was approximately $5, while longer rides of 20-30 minutes were around $20. The availability and access during the World Cup are uncertain.

Rental cars – Given the compact size of the country, other available transportation options, and added expense/inconvenience of parking this is unlike to be the best option for most fans. However, as of early April, reservations were widely available with prices of $100-150 per day for car rentals.

Metro – Newly build and a source of pride in the nation, the system includes three separate lines covering a large portion of the Doha - reaching to or near most World Cup stadiums. The stations’ brown signs and small entry buildings can be difficult to spot. In addition, the Metro app lacks an interactive map. So, when considering using the Metro familiarize yourself with the details of your route beforehand. More detail on riding the Metro will be added here as the World Cup approaches
